The romantic drama
First Knight stars Richard Gere as the infamous Lancelot. This solitary soul wanders the countryside doing whatever it takes to earn a living. When his path crosses that of Guinevere, played by Julia Ormond (on her way to be married to King Arthur, played by Sean Connery), Lancelot heroically comes to her aide and rescues her from a marauding band of kidnappers serving the interests of Prince Malagant (played by Ben Cross).

Later, their paths cross once again at Camelot where Lancelot completes a gauntlet and wins the right to kiss the soon-to-be queen. But, he passes on the opportunity preferring to wait for her to request a kiss from him. Shortly thereafter, Malagant’s second kidnapping attempt is successful. Guinevere is placed securely in the innermost part of his fortress.
Yet, as soon as Lancelot sees what is happening, he unhesitatingly pursues after her with all of his might. He reaches her at the heart of Malagant’s heavily guarded fortress. Then, single-handedly, he rescues her and returns her to Camelot. There, King Arthur declares to him, “
Look at you – no wealth, no home, no gold - just the passionate spirit that drives you on. God uses people like you Lancelot – because your heart is open. You hold nothing back – give all of yourself.”
Within all of us is something that yearns for such passion for life and undeterred bravery. We want to live our lives wholeheartedly – holding nothing back. Yet, most of us tend to live rather half-hearted lives. Perhaps it is because we haven’t found something worthy of giving our lives to yet. Before reaching Camelot, Lancelot indicated that he didn’t care whether he lived or died. Once there, he discovered something that changed his value system. He found something for which he wanted to live – something for which he was willing to die.
Fear is one of the culprits that cause us to settle for less than the full measure of life for which we long. We fear loosing life and so we stop living. We decide to settle for that which is safe to get. So, the only life we cling to is that which can be found within the walls of our comfort zone (which isn’t much at all – if any).
The fiery passion for deep life that we once held more precious than all else has lost all meaning. The dream has faded into something entirely different – something so safe and tame that it has no life left in it. Yet, occasionally, we see the likes of a Lancelot and we envy the passionate spirit within him. Something wells up within us and tells us that we have been asleep far too long.

Fear creeps into our lives and becomes an active agent causing us to filter our every decision through its distorted lens. Fear may start out as something healthy that keeps us from danger, but once embraced, it quickly consumes everything within its reach (hope, life, dreams, a healthy imagination, vision). It chars through the most precious things in our lives leaving in its wake regret, bitterness, shame, accusations, and condemnation. Somehow, most of us agree to allow fear to make these exchanges in our lives (hope traded for bitterness, dreams for condemnation, etc.).
What about you? Do you subconsciously filter most of your thousands of daily decisions through fear’s lens (i.e. eat as a comfort, make purchases to try to fill the void, gossip to feel better about yourself, etc.)? Have you traded your dreams for regrets? Ultimately, the choice is yours. You can sit comfortably in your home and allow the Malagant’s in your life to kidnap your most previous things; or, you can abandon yourself to living deeply like Lancelot. You can pick up your sword and run full speed into fear’s fortress and take back what you really need to life deeply – that which is rightfully yours.
Granted, it will take courage. Nothing worth having comes easily. You will have to fight to have what you need to live deeply. The choice is yours though. The life I’ve found is available to you too. You can have as much of it as you refuse to live without. Indeed, refusing to live without it as a requirement to having it. You must invest you time and courageously fight for what you want. Yet, you won’t be alone, I’m here as a guide to show you the way. You will discover how to apply them to your life to free you from fears and allow you to find fulfillment for your deepest desires. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
