The Rewards of Fasting

Last Updated July 12

Fasting is a gift from God that goes much further than not eating; it is a means to experiencing the power and affections of God. Jesus promised us that we would be rewarded for fasting. Done in the right spirit, fasting increases our receptivity to God's voice and His Word. This book explores the rewards and delights that come to those who fast.

Fasting. It sounds difficult. Fasting every week. That sounds impossible! Our society considers hunger among the worst of fates, but God calls fasting part of our faith. Hunger for God is not foreign to anyone who loves Jesus . It is an ache within that makes us desperate for deeper measures of abundant life. What may be new to some people is that fasting is an avenue God has chosen to answer our hunger and to fuel our experience of Him. Fasting is essential because it answers our cry for more of God.

In order to respond to God's invitation to fast, we must first discover the truth about this grace and discipline, including the joys of embracing voluntary weakness, the amazing benefits of a fasted lifestyle, and the dangers to avoid along the way. This journey of fasting intensifies our experience of God's heart, increases our encounter of Jesus as the Bridegroom, and equips us to operate in the power of the Holy Spirit in the severe times in which we live. Fasting is not something we can neglect or avoid but something we must embrace wholeheartedly.

Mike Bickle is the president, and director, of the International House of Prayer (IHOP), president of Friends of the Bridegroom (FOTB), and co-founder of The Joseph Company of Kansas City. He currently is the most-featured speaker at Sunday worship services at Forerunner Christian Fellowship, the local church associated with IHOP, and the Head of Prayer/Prayer Director of the international GOD TV television network.

Bickle was formerly the pastor of the Kansas City Fellowship, which is now known as Metro Christian Fellowship. In that role, during the 1980s and 1990s, he was senior pastor of the group known to detractors and supporters alike as the "Kansas City Prophets." This group included Bob Jones, John Paul Jackson, Paul Cain, and by some accounts Francis Frangipane. In regards to the moniker "Kansas City Prophets" Bickle is quoted as saying, "I hated that name."

While working 30 hours a week for IHOP, and 30 hours a week for FOTB, Bickle has also authored or co-authored numerous books. The primary focus of his teachings is to prepare the body of Christ for the last stage of human history and the return of Jesus. His teachings focus on growing in love for God, and encouraging people to live out New Testament Christianity. He is most well known for his teachings on the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon).

With his involvement with IHOP, Bickle has been on the forefront of the restoration of 24/7 prayer and worship in the "spirit of the Tabernacle of David." Regarding the Tabernacle of David, Bickle states "It's a prophecy about the victorious church in power. It's more than a prayer and worship ministry, but that's a key part of it. There's a priestly and a kingly dimension to it." The Joseph Company, founded by Bickle, is a ministry to those that work in the marketplace, that operates in conjunction with IHOP. One of their goals is to encourage the ministry of "Treasure Bringers" within the church, whose "greatest joy is plundering the wealth of the world for their Lord." (Provided courtesy of Wikipedia)
