Religion is a subject that arouses strong reactions in people. There are many passionate proponents of religion, yet many who feel just as strongly against the whole notion. Of its proponents, there is immense division over whose view is right. Many cling to the opinion that which you believe is not as important as simply believing in something. Yet, many religious systems suggest that if you do not follow their particular tenets of faith, that you will not find eternal life. There are so many views and splinter groups that it can be daunting to try to discern any real substance amidst the divisive chatter. In the face of all of the chaotic controversy, many have concluded that they want nothing to do with any of it. So many bad things have come out of religion that many find it fundamentally counterproductive. Also, many people look upon religion from the outside suspiciously because they have seen the differences between some people’s beliefs and their lifestyles. Additionally, we’ve all witnessed the brutal devastation caused by individuals following their religious agenda. So, is there any real substance to religion or is it all subjective ranting and counterproductive ideologies? I hope to demonstrate how there is real substance to religion as well as numerous deceptions and misperceptions about it. Part of the problem lies in a lack of understanding the nature of religion and how the foundational premise behind religions varies so significantly. I recognize that in sharing my perspective on the topic, I risk adding one voice to the chatter. Yet, I hope to provide meaningful dialogue and not become part of the problem. I believe that sound answers are within our reach, but some hurdles must be overcome to find them.
